This Dirty Devil River photo gallery, it is full of pictures from our scouting trip in this month (January).

On the Road to Hanksville From the North.

Getting closer to Hanksville!

We're here in Hanksville, Utah!! Read Below!!

I have to say that the people here are really nice and the small town atmosphere is great. We ran into a few cowboys and I had the oportunity to talk to the locals about the Dirty Devil River. We talked to a gentleman named Lavar and he told us all about the river. Boy was he was a big help, he said he's run cattle up the river for many years. He took his pen out and marked up our map and told us where the rapids were. He also gave a us good location for the some of the narrowest slot canyons in th U.S. and probably in the world. He said "there are spots where where you can touch the canyon walls with your hands stretched out to your sides and the cayon walls will tower you by hundreds of feet."

Breakfast at Blondie's

We had to eat breakfast and there is no better place than Blondie's. I recommend the steak and eggs.

Inside Blondie's

I recommend the steak and eggs! Good price and great food.

Hollow Mountain Gas Station

We liked getting our gas here because they were friendly, plus their gas station is carved into the rock. You have to go inside!!

Whispering Sands Motel

Haven't stayed there, but it looked good. They are booked on the weekends. so you'll need a reservation.

Local Rock Shop

We like to help support the locals, so we bought a few rocks. If this place doesn't have it, it probably does not exist. Lots of petrified wood and other cool rocks.

The Wolverton Mill

This thing is amazing when you look at how it works! Neat piece of history. It is located by the BLM office on the west side of town. Do a web search and you can read about it. I couldn't cover it in this section because there is to much information.

3 of us at the Dirty Devil River sign

From left to right...Badger, Bam Bam, and Tank. We had to scout the place out and check on the conditions. We were able to get a good look at the put in, middle and finish. Plus we were able to get some good views of the canyons from above.

Optional Put In Location #1

This is a view looking down the river from the southern bridge in Hanksville. Notice the ice..? We're glad we're not kayaking it in the winter. Water was cold and ice was flowing in patches down the river.

Up the River at Optional Put In #1

Optional Put In Location #2

This area is down the river from the bridge a mile or two.

Optional Put In Location #2

Looking up the river.

Henry Mountains

This is the view looking west of the highway to Lake Powell. This is about 17 miles south of Hanksville. The views are amazing!!!!

Burr Point

This is a view looking down on the river from Burr Point.

Burr Point

This is another angle looking down on the Dirty Devil River from Burr Point.

Burr Point

Taken at a distance so you can see the towering terrain.

Burr Point

This shot was taken so we could get as much terrain is as possible.

Burr Point View "Zoomed"

This is a zoomed in shot of the Dirty Devil River as it decends into the canyon. The canyon narrows beyond the cameras eye.

Burr Point looking North West

View of a Canyon Wall

This is a shot we took on the decent into Poison Springs.

A Slot Canyon

This was a picture that we took in a slot canyon on the way don to Poison Springs. The rocks smooth out (slick rock) and turn a reddish color when you get closer to Happy Canyon.

Another View of A Slot Canyon

This was futher in the slot canyon.

On the Way Out of the Slot Canyon

I thought this was a good shot of the surrounding terrain with the sun behind it.

Poison Springs

You can see the USGS waterflow gauge.

Down Stream From Poison Springs

Down Stream From Poison Springs

This is a view looking upstream in the same location as the last picture.

Further Down Stream From Poison Springs

In this shot you can see the river winding its way down. This location is just about 3-4 miles from where the walls close in and the river decends towards Happy Canyon.

Another View From Further Up The Hill

I walked up the hill and shot down into the canyon so you could see where the walls start to close in and starts the decent. You have to look just left of center to see the river being devoured by the canyon walls.

Near Lake Powell

This shot was taken upstream from Lake Powell about 5 miles. This is a good depiction of what we will encounter along the way. Except the walls in this picture are very short.

Above Lake Powell About 5 Miles

In this shot I took the picture facing down stream. In the next few pictures I will pan out so you can see the view of the surrounding terrain.

Expanded View

Really Expanded View

This is a wide angle shot of the river and you can see the terrain towering the river. This is where the it starts to expand and flatten out before we reach the Green River and Lake Powell.

Looking Up From Lake Powell

If you look just left of the point on the right you can almost see where the Dirty Devil merges with the Colorado River.

Dirty Devil Meets the Green River

In the center of this shot you can see where the Dirty Devil River merges with the Green River.

River View Into Lake Powell

In this shot you can see where the Dirty Devil River meets Lake Powell. Down there on the left about a mile is the Hite Marina, or what use to be. The water level is way down, so they relocated it further down the Lake. Next photo will show you the Old Hite Marina.

Exit Point

This is the exit point for the expedition. We will be hauling the kayaks up to the dirt launch ramp on the left. Looks like we will be pulling them through some mud to get there.

Lake Powell

This a view of the lake looking down below the old Hite Marina. You can see that the water level in down quite a bit. They can only hope for rain and snow to help boost the level of the lake.

As it says......
